A Bush of Christs

- - posted in Ancient Archives

This is a very disturbing poster. I really hope this is satire, but it looks horribly sincere…

New Quake 2

- - posted in Ancient Archives

Quake 2 may be old, but it’s still played by many people. Id Software kindly open sourced the code last year, and here’s the result: a new version of Quake 2 with many bugfixes and new features, and more to come.

I could never get past The Big Gun without Q2 crashing. Now I can get back to the game, and with full OpenGL acceleration under Linux too. <a href="http://quakeforge.net/">QuakeForge</a> also have an enhanced version of the original Quake.

U.S. Destruction of Iraqi Water Supply?

- - posted in Ancient Archives

If this is true, then the USA is guilty of using subtle biological terrorism. Damaging civilian water supplies and hindering their repair via sanctions is not a decent thing to do, or even effective. Children and old people will die, and their families will hate the USA - surely that will only cause more trouble?

Students

- - posted in Ancient Archives

Arteth is now a student again, doing an MSc. Helen (sister) is also now a student again, doing an MA. I am not a student again, but I’m compensating by buying more books and CDs. Arteth’s course is very intensive and rather expensive, with a huge reading list and a lot of topics to cover in a short time. The emphasis is on practical skills. Helen’s studies are more academic and research based, probably involving Europe and terrorism. Less practical skills in this course I hope.

New Fljud Released

- - posted in Ancient Archives

I’ve released a new version of Fljud onto Sourceforge. This one’s mainly bug fixes and a bit more documentation. I’ve been careful to check that lots of different browsable folder configurations are possible, but I forgot to check that users could configure only one, or even none at all. Doh. I’m leaving Fljud alone for a while now so I can work on Fljauth and Smartcast instead.

The Policy of Blood and Mysticism

- - posted in Ancient Archives

Russian tabloid journalism (in English) from Pravda.ru. “According to other rumors, there is an underground city called New Berlin there with a two-million-strong population… Indirect proof of such a city is the fact that UFOs can often be seen around the South Pole.”

The H.P. Lovecraft Library

- - posted in Ancient Archives

The copyright status of Lovecraft’s work is vague. It looks as if the copyright has lapsed, so The H.P. Lovecraft Library has put a large amount of his work online as both HTML and PDF documents. This site is an excellent resource.

With the recent frenzy of new "Intellectual Property" laws in the USA and Europe, will this be possible for today's writers, or will their work just fade away as their publishers lose interest but hold onto the copyright?

Russia Makes It Funny

“Aliens were definitely involved in the events of September 11. This is the common opinion amid some of Berkley residents.” I also like the headline “Fat people get free whiskey in Thailand”.
