I Think I’d Vote for Georgy

- - posted in Ancient Archives

But not for the two most cited reasons: not because she’s “a geek” or cute. In among the crowd of conventional, controversial and novelty candidates, she stands out with actual, clear sensible ideas. She seems to be smart, honest and sincere.

I don’t think Georgy has much of a chance, but it’s good that she’s running.

Discworld Reading Order Guides

Making the best of Pratchett reading with a map. You’ll still not get all the cross references until you read the books a second time, though. It’s interesting to see that some of the groups can be read from starter books at each end.

I’d like to see someone do this for Michael Moorcock novels. There are some quite remarkable parallel plots and “crossover” chapters in some of the classic Moorcock novels.

This diagram resembles a small MUD map, which is pleasantly appropriate.

Too Hot.

I don’t really feel the cold, but hot weather has always made me feel horrible. Maybe I should migrate northwards with the shrinking icecaps. Or go to live somewhere less befuddled than England, where airconditioning is normal.

I’m posting this out of cultural necessity.

New Ape?

- - posted in Ancient Archives

Has a new species of great ape been discovered? Maybe. It looks to me as if it’s at most a new species of chimpanzee.

I’m deeply skeptical of the chimp-gorilla hybrid theory. It may or may not be physically or genetically possible, but I just can’t see chimpanzees or bonobos being socially compatible with gorillas. Although bonobos will have sex with anything, I don’t think that the notoriously chaste gorillas would put up with it.

(Describing chimpanzees as carnivorous is a bit extreme - they can hunt and eat meat, but most of the diet is vegetable based, I think)

Lorem Ipsum

Generate all the Lorem Ipsum you need. You will then get a higher quality publishing error after forgetting to remove your placeholder content before publication.

“Caption here caption here caption here” just isn’t the same.

Empathy Belly

An interesting and very odd gadget to “enable men, women, teenage girls and boys, experience over 20 symptoms and effects of pregnancy”

“I have always wanted to be a teen mom but now I don’t”

Time Shifting

- - posted in Ancient Archives

And lo, his blog was an empty wasteland, for he had posted naught for many days!

Lots to do, but also lots done. No Hippo programing for two weeks as I do other things. I’m at a point where I should upload the first bugged and basic pile of code to Sourceforge’s CVS, and start using makefiles and things to make progress more efficient.

Some days recently I’ve just wanted to sleep all day and night as there’s so much to do, and other days I don’t want to sleep at all for the same reason.

Time to clear some of the blog backlog (backblog?) and then wander off to see what else I can do. What I’d like to be doing is sitting in a quiet forest somewhere, eating cake. No chance of silvan bliss for a long time yet.

The Odeon Website Again

- - posted in Ancient Archives

I grumbled at length about the awful Odeon website in a blog post last year. It is possibly the worst commercial website I have ever seen.

Now someone has built a site that wraps up the official site content, and reshapes it to make it useful! Now you can access the Odeon site on something other than Internet Explorer for Windows. The unofficial site runs faster, is clearer, easier to use - apart from the lack of online ordering, it’s better in every way.

The Odeon should immediately pay Matthew Somerville for his effort, and then fire everyone responsible for the original site. Or lock them in a room with Jacob Nielsen until they repent.
